This course is offered by the Centre for Higher Education Development (CHED) as part of its Multilinguali sm Education Project and is aimed at equipping members of staff with basic communication skills in Xhosa. The main focus of the course is on developing conversational skills. On completing the course participants should be able to converse in everyday situations and to respond to simple enquiries in their work situations. The course is offered and Beginners' and Intermediate Levels.
Details are as follows:
The course is offered at the beginner's level and will be offered twice, (i) March to May and (ii) August to October of each year.
There will be one hour lecture a week, for 12 weeks.
In order to provide some flexibility, lectures will take place in the lunch hour and will be repeated in the late afternoon (participants can go to either).
Class size will be kept small
A certificate of successful completion of the course will be provided for participants who pass a simple oral examination at the end of the course.
For course participants who do not wish to take assessment, a certificate of attendance (requiring participation in at least 10 of the 12 sessions) will be provided.
The course may be offered in-house in departments or units where there is sufficient number of participants.
Staff will need to have obtained written support from their HoDs to attend the course.
